How we score popcorn
Atlas scores are editorial, 0 to 5. We take the entire experience into account: usefulness and integrity. A number is a judgment, not a sale.
An Atlas score is editorial. It is a number from 0 to 5, one decimal when we have enough notes to be that precise. It is not a user star. It is not an average of comments. It is not for sale. We take the entire experience into account: the kernel, the hull, the pot or the bag, the honesty of the pitch, and whether a popcorn person can use the thing. Usefulness and integrity. Those two words do most of the work.
Usefulness is practical. Can you finish the bowl. Does the flake do the job it claims. Is the bag still popcorn, or has it become a seasoning vehicle. Integrity is whether the company tells the truth about the corn. A farm that names a variety is doing different work than a flavor lab that names a mood. Both can be useful. Only one is a farm.
What a 5 is, and what a 3 is
A 5 is rare. It means the eat, the plant, and the file all hold. The kernel is the point. The hull respects the eater. The company does not ask you to clap for a slogan. You would keep the jar on the counter and tell a friend the name.
A 4 is a bag or a jar we respect and will buy again. Something real is happening in the flake. A 3 is competent. It pops. It is on the map. It is not the last word. A grocery microwave that does its job can live here. We do not talk down to that use. Theater buckets are collectibles. Grocery bags are how most of the country meets corn.
Below 3, the file is still a record, but the eat or the pitch has a problem we can name. We have not published a 0. A 0 would mean the thing is not popcorn, or it is a lie. We have not needed that number yet.
New listings stay unscored. An em dash is not a 0. It means Barron has not tasted it. Other testers' rankings can be cited. They are not copied onto the Atlas number.
Why we do not sell the ranking
If a score can be bought, it is advertising. The Atlas is a record. Outbound links go to brand sites. No affiliate dressing in v1. No brand can pay to move a number, add a star, or bury a competitor. A national grocery bag can be useful and still sit below an Iowa heirloom. That order is editorial, not a rate card.
Farm varieties sit above flavor labs when the eat earns it. Availability is noted, not paid for. Rank is only assigned when there is a score. Unscored names sit under the ranked column, in the same list, with a dash.
How to read a listing
Every brand already has a review URL and a brand file. Key facts, the pot, hulls, company, and where to buy are the working sections. The number, if there is one, sits next to that file. It does not replace it.
For the method of heat, read how to pop. For the plant, read types of popcorn. For oil, salt, and the bag, read oil, salt, and seasoning. For who we are, read about the Atlas.
